They form I recently came across the Robert Fagles translation and it strikes a good balance between the original poetic form and being understandable. Setting out from Troy in Turkey, Like the Iliad, the Odyssey may have been written by Homer, who may or may not have been blind, or by a committee of poets. Here we have Homer's Odyssey as translated by the celebrated Robert Fagles, who died this past March. I can't recommend this translation. I'm not sure I'd ever read The Odyssey from start to finish before: Robert Fagles' translation sings, and made the reading much more enjoyable than it might've been if I'd stuck to one of the older versions available for free on the web! I know that this topic has been brought up before, but i am still non the wiser on which translation of the odyssey i should go for. If you don't know, Homer's The Odyssey is a direct sequel and Virgil's Aenied tells another part of the story after The Iliad ends. It is what fired my imagination for swords and sorcery books and Dungeons and Dragons. Ive narrowed it down to I've read Fagles's Odyssey and am currently reading Lattimore's Iliad. Rieu's son in more contemporary English, as he said his father's translation was slightly archaic, so presumably the Penguin Iliad has been similarly revised. Do we just like The Odyssey more because it's a better story?
